On Indexical Reference

چکیده

Thesis: Indexicals are not essential in the sense of being semantically irreducible; the arguments for the semantic irreducibility of indexicals only apply to referentially-opaque readings of indexicals in the scope of attitude verbs. Suppose, Sally, Peter and Max spend a nice evening in a pub, and Max suddenly utters: (1) Max: I’ve lost my wallet. That’s an unpleasant situation. Not only will poor Max have problems paying the bill, he has also uttered a sentence containing the so-called essential indexical «I». Indexicals in general and essential indexicals like «I» in particular have been troubling various logicians and philosophers of language. In this paper, I will defend the following thesis: Essential indexicals are no more, or no less essential than any other referential expression in natural languages. My main argument boils down to the following: When a ∗ Copyright c © 2003 by Erich Rast, minor revisions to this draft have been made on July 17, 2007.

On Depicting Indexical Reference

1. Quasi-Indexical Attributions According to Hector-Neri Castañeda, indexical reference is our most basic means of identifying the objects and events we experience and think about. Its tokens reveal our own part in the process by denoting what are "referred to as items present in experience" (Castañeda 1981, 285-6). If you hear me say, "Take that box over there and set it next to this box here,...

Symbolic, Indexical, and Iconic Communication with Domestic Dogs

Recent studies in canine communication are reviewed using Deacon’s framework of iconic, indexical, and symbolic reference. The presented analysis examines these studies using Deacon’s notion of interpretant, taking into account the evolutionary and perceptual capacities of the dog. By taking these dispositions and capacities into account, the conclusions that have been drawn in current studies ...

Are Lexical Meaning and Context Sufficient for Determining Indexical Reference?

David Kaplan’s ([Kaplan, 1989b], [Kaplan, 1989a]) philosophical work on indexicals has been influential not only with philosophers, but also with psychologists and linguists (e.g., Miller and Nunberg). Nevertheless, Kaplan’s account of indexicals has several problems. In this paper, I discuss his view that lexical meaning and context are sufficient for determining the reference of what he calls...

'I' as a Pure Indexical and Metonymy as Language Reduction

Most direct reference theorists believe that ‘I’ is a pure indexical. This means that when ‘I’ is uttered, it contributes with the speaker to what is said. But, from some conceptions of metonymy as reference transfer, if ‘I’ is used metonymically, it has an improper meaning and the object referred to is not the speaker. We will show that all theories of metonymy as transfer are inadequate and s...

Reference and Indexicality

This thesis is a general defence of a context-dependent description theory of reference with special regards to indexical reference on the basis of a truth-conditional theory of meaning. It consists of two parts. In the first part, the roots of the Frege-Russell view are laid out and contrasted with various aspects of direct reference theory and the New Theory of Reference. Two description-base...
